The Sioux Falls City Council voted in favor of a plan to trim paratransit bus service http://paratransit.svbtle.com/ Tuesday, despite pleas from the disabled community to support the service.
Starting next year, Sioux Area Metro will introduce the first phase of changes that aim to curb spending on paratransit and expand offerings for fixed-route buses.
Paratransit is a door-to-door service, and it can't serve the the same number of people as a bus on a regular route. It costs Sioux Area Metro $3.36 to give a ride on the city bus and $24.23 per ride on paratransit, which consumes almost half of the city's transit budget.
"If the fixed route system is going to grow, it's just not cost effective," Sioux Area Metro General Manager Eric Meyerson said.
Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously adopted recommendations that a 22-member transit taskforce put together in the past year.
A number of paratransit users and supporters have brought concerns to the task force and the council. Some said the service should be seen as a community asset rather than a drain on resources. |
